Thousands of students received k-8th grade scholarships through Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia

Philadelphia families were surprised with the exciting news during the non-profit’s annual Lottery Day celebration at Philadelphia Insurance Companies

PHILADELPHIA – This week, Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia (CSFP) surprised thousands of families across the City with the news that their children will receive scholarships for the 2023-2024 school year. Volunteers and staff from CSFP and Philadelphia Insurance Companies made calls to families whose children will now receive scholarships during CSFP’s annual Lottery Day celebration on December 14, held this year at Philadelphia Insurance Companies’ headquarters in Bala Cynwyd.

A special addition to this year’s Lottery Day event was an in-person surprise for five families. Families were invited on-site under the guise of a holiday party and were surprised with the news that their children will each be receiving one of CSFP’s scholarships to attend tuition-based schools of their choice. These families were greeted by dozens of Lottery Day volunteers to celebrate the occasion and enjoyed a night of fun, complete with gifts and crafts for the children.

“Every year I’m overwhelmed by the spirit of our Lottery Day celebration. It’s an honor to be part of the team making access to quality education possible for Philadelphia’s youth, especially during this monumental year when we’ve eliminated even more barriers for the City’s families,” said Keisha Jordan, President and CEO, Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia. “I want to thank our partners at Philadelphia Insurance Companies, the volunteers who joined us this year for a very special night, the generous donors who support our mission, and the program ambassadors who make sure families across the city know about this important opportunity.”

“At Philadelphia Insurance Companies, we believe all children deserve access to quality, safe education, and therefore, CSFP’s mission is of the utmost importance to our company,” said John Glomb, President and CEO, Philadelphia Insurance Companies. “We have proudly supported CSFP in various capacities for nearly 10 years, and it is our pleasure to be this year’s presenting sponsor for Lottery Day. Whether through directly supporting scholarship payments, or through sponsoring events like this, we are committed to building the Philadelphia community by lifting up students and families.”

CSFP’s need-based partial scholarships can be used at over 160 area diverse private schools and are given to randomly selected applicants. This marks the first year that CSFP is eliminating its four-year limit on scholarships, meaning students will receive financial support through 8th grade regardless of the grade they are in upon receiving their scholarship. This will directly impact more than 700 current CSFP families who will not have to reapply for scholarships, but rather just have their existing support extended. Additionally, all students who receive scholarships through the lottery will receive no less than $1,200 per year through their 8th grade graduation.

While the majority of 2023-2024 scholarship winners were selected as part of the priority lottery drawing, applications are still being accepted through March 1. Any applicants not selected in the December lottery will automatically be entered into a final lottery in early March.
