CSFP officially opened applications to our random scholarship lottery for the 2019-2020 school year on September 22, 2018. The CSFP team and Parent Ambassadors (PAs) traveled to six different recreation centers across the city to meet with Philadelphia families and help them apply to the lottery for 2,000 new scholarships. Hundreds of families joined us in their communities to learn about our scholarship process and ask questions about accessing quality education in Philadelphia. Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia and GreatPhillySchools are teaming up again to host the 3rd-annual Philly K-8 School Fair on Saturday, October 27, from 10am-1pm at Girard College. This cross-sector School Fair will showcase public district, public charter, and private elementary and middle schools in the Philadelphia area. Over 100 schools will table the event, in addition to representatives from the Philadelphia School District and local community partners. The event is FREE and open to the public. Throughout the fall, CSFP will spend time in communities throughout the city providing resources and support to help families make the best decision about their children’s K-8th grade education. We will host two important events: Citywide Application Launch September 22nd, 11AM-2PM CSFP will host a citywide event to celebrate the opening of our random lottery* for School Year 2019-2020 scholarships. Now in our third year of the Parent Ambassador (PA) program, CSFP will work with 45 parents of children in our program to build community this school year. PAs help CSFP spread the word about our scholarships, liaise with school administrators, and work to ensure that CSFP families get the most out of their scholarships. This year, PAs will work in 43 schools throughout the city, serving a majority of CSFP scholarship recipients and their families. More than 400 CSFP students and family members joined CSFP for our annual trip to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden on August 1. CSFP scholarship recipients and their families learned about sharks, hippos, and other marine life at this one-day event, made possible through CSFP’s partnership with local cultural access program, Art-Reach. CSFP provides trips to local cultural institutions as way to enrich our program, and provide families with opportunities to give their children educational experiences outside the classroom. In July, 27 CSFP students, entering 8th and 9th grades, joined CSFP and local teachers at the Honickman Learning Center for a summer tutorial focusing on math, writing, and computer programming. This six-session tutorial featured individualized instruction, small group projects, and independent learning activities focused on the three core subject areas. CSFP began this summertime program in 2006 when CSFP families reported that they would appreciate affordable, summer tutoring opportunities for their children.
